6 Tips to Start Using ITIL Without Complication

The term “ITIL” doesn’t always bring good memories to people. This is because some have problems starting to use it and end up giving up completely. On the other hand, others are afraid that this will happen. Therefore, that’s why we have brought tips to start using ITIL.

But if you start in the right way, all these problems can be easily avoided. So, after reading this post, you will start to see ITIL more as an opportunity than as a fear. So, read to the end!

1- Identify the causes of problems with ITIL

ITIL proposes that you eliminate errors as soon as you identify them in order to control problems. Often, IT teams jump from one problem to another, trying to solve one at a time without analyzing them. However, if you pay close attention, you will see that many of these are related or similar.

Therefore, instead of going one by one, what is suggested with ITIL is that you eliminate the root cause. Thus, problem management becomes more effective, and you have to deal with fewer common problems.

As a result, it follows that it is necessary to invest more in investigating the causes of each IT problem. Therefore, understand the cause of each incident and identify solutions that are permanent.

2- Have a centralized IT helpdesk

When you can start with ITIL more quickly, you will see that there is not only a time gain but also a lot of facilitation in future use. For this, it often just needs to improve what you already do.

That said, it is likely that in your company, you already have a helpdesk where people go when they have IT problems. In this case, the idea is to take advantage of this existing structure, optimize it, and then use it.

This is because by having such a formalized location, people already know where to go in case of problems. Therefore, it becomes easier to manage each mishap and improve operational performance in service.

3- Manage your changes

For the work to function effectively and organized, all changes in your work environment must be under some formal management. Thus, changes should observe business objectives, not just technical aspects, obeying ITIL.

This is because bad changes, even if technically valid, become problematic for the company if they are not aligned with the overall objective. This can lead to financial, legal, and reputational losses.

4- Track software licenses

Keeping an eye on software is part of good ITIL practice. This point even appears in ITIL books but is generally not considered one of the most important. Even so, software asset management (SAM) is relevant to companies in general.

Based on this, it is easier to manage responsibilities – from legal to financial, passing through several sectors. This is because it allows the understanding of which software is actually installed and how it is used.

Moreover, and equally important, it also allows you to observe if the licenses are in force. In these cases, the riskier areas are Adobe, Microsoft, Oracle, among others. And ideally, this should also be integrated into your IT center.

5- Use CMDB

Databases for configuration management (CMDB) are very useful for solving problems with ITIL. They even assist in that initial process I mentioned, of identifying the common cause of problems at its root.

Following this, you can also evaluate impact changes and build a technical layer in the service catalog. Moreover, even if the CMDB is not yet complete, or if it is used by only a few sectors, you should still integrate the incidents.

Thus, when you create a problem or change, do not forget to link it to some service. Also, remember to add more information if it is not yet complete.

As a result, you will have a more complete picture of how your company’s IT is doing. With this, you can create a healthier relationship between the IT elements and the services you offer in your business.

6- Take ITIL preparatory courses

Finally, a sixth tip for getting used to ITIL is to take preparatory courses before taking the exam!

With these six tips for getting started with ITIL, you’re sure to be more successful and your experience will be good.
